THE STUDIO
June 13 2023 - The very first head.
Later that day. I used the head as a reference to make these sketches of human heads in 3D space.
I was rather proud of that first head, so I decided to try 3D scanning it with a phone app. The app used the checkerboard pattern as a reference during the scan.
As a surprise to no one - the $20 phone app didn't do a great job catching detail on the original model. It was a fun test though.
and I went ahead and 3D printed it anyway.
July 3rd, 2023. This is the first face I made after camp ended. I enjoyed the head that i made in 20 minutes so i figured - why not try again?
I'm still rather proud of this guy.
July 6, 2023 - I made another. The goal was to see if I could make a face with it's mouth open.
Yes - his mouth isn't really open. I love him anyway.

August 10, 2023 - I wish i'd taken a before photo... the clay wasn't cooperating so I had to remind it who's boss.

September 11, 2023 - The state of the giant head experiment. He's become a convenient place to snag extra clay and wipe excess clay from my tools. I'm learning to love him.
September 11, 2023 - I started this new guy but haven't had the time to finish him up. Notice one nostril isn't attached and his expression is vague...
September 11, 2023 - Reviewing my progress.
September 13, 2023 - I ran out of wax and needed to do a test cast to remind myself what an older mold was. This early Toothy Goober experiment made the ultimate sacrifice.
September 13, 2023 - And away he goes...
September 14, 2023 - The nex wax arrives! Until now i'd been playing around with very expensive wax from my local Williamsburg art supply store, and less expensive but very subpar was from Michaels. I ended up ordering Beeswax and a vegan pillar wax blend from a woman owned wholesale company in Oregon.

September 16, 2023 - After the melt test. The wax pooled everywhere and only the lower part of the face remained. (This is where Vast and Trunkless came from)
September 16, 23 - Beeswax burn test.
September 18, 2023 - Beginning of an assembly line with color tests. The droppers that came with the dyes are really messy. Cross contamination runs rampant.
September 25, 2023 - Thank you for all the birthday well wishes! An army is amassing.
September 26, 2023 - So this project is not and has never been about smell. And yet... it it is impossible to hold a candle in your hand without smelling it. So I picked up a kit. We'll see if this amounts to anything more than a distraction.
